Venice Lighthouse, Italy
One of the most characteristic views of Venice is undoubtedly the one that stretches from St. Mark's Square towards the lagoon, where the stupendous Church of San Giorgio Maggiore with its unmistakable bell tower stands out.
The Benedictine monks arrived on the homonymous island in 982, when the abbot Giovanni Morosini obtained the island of the Doge and had the entire area recovered.
Since 1296, the old and small church, already existing at the end of the Middle Ages, housed the arm of San Giorgio, to which the head was added in 1462. These relics, once preserved under the high altar, were so venerated that the Doge himself would go visit once a year during the patronal festival: between the 25th and 26th of December.
The current forms and structure are the result of a long renovation campaign that began in the 15th century and ended only in the 17th century. The current basilica is one of the last interventions: designed in the mid-16th century by Andrea Palladio, it was only completed several decades later.
